Director's letter

One of the most important duties performed annually by the CAS Professors on behalf of the Center for Advanced Study is the evaluation of the applications to the CAS Release- Time Program and the selection of the newest Associates and Fellows. We were all impressed by the high caliber of this year’s applicants, who also made up the largest applicant pool in recent years. I would like to thank the Office of the Provost for providing additional funding which enabled us to award more superlative projects than our budget allowed. You will find the list of our latest Associates and Fellows inside.

This new semester features talks from 3 of our initiatives, past, present and future. Noshir Contractor (Speech Communications) is overseeing the second year of the speaker series for The Age of Networks: Social, Cultural and Technological Connections. Upcoming talks are listed on the Networks website, hosted by NCSA at http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Conferences/Networks/. CAS Professor and Resident Associate Sue Kieffer (Geology) and CAS Resident Associate Robert McKim (Religious Studies) are co-teaching a course entitled Environmental Sustainability: Scientific and Ethical Perspectives, in conjunction with the speaker series for the current initiative on Mega-Disasters: Science, Policy and Human Behavior. In 2008-09, Jim Barrett (History) and Gale Summerfield (WGGP) will spearhead the initiative on Immigration: History and Policy. Panels and lectures leading up to this project begin this semester. Please consult our website for more information on these and other events.

Besides talks related to our initiatives, our calendar is full of other exciting public events. Our CAS/MillerComm series continues this semester with speakers on topics encompassing domestic and international issues from the past and the present day. Maria Todorova (History) will deliver this year’s Chancellor’s CAS Special Lecture and I am delighted to report that CAS Professor Stephen Jaeger (Germanic Languages and Literatures) will deliver the CAS Annual Lecture in the Fall semester 2007.

As ever, please remember that the Center is always willing to accept requests on a rolling basis for cosponsorship funding outside of the CAS/MillerComm application process. Small grants are available to offset the costs associated with a single speaker, and larger grants are available for conferences and symposia. To request CAS cosponsorship, please send a formal request (narrative proposal, brief bio and complete budget of projected income and expenses) to Associate Director Masumi Iriye at iriye@uiuc.edu.

Best wishes for this academic year,

Leon Dash
Interim Director
