He is now a faculty associate at the California Institute of Technology, having retired from the University of Illinois in 1986. He received the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry (1963); Medal for Creative Research in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Synthetic Organic Chemistry Manufacturers Association (1970); Roger Adams Award in Organic Chemistry, American Chemical Society (1981); George W. Wheland Award, University of Chicago (1991); the first Creativity Award, University of Oregon (1994); Paul G. Gassman Distinguished Service Award, Division of Organic Chemistry, American Chemical Society (1994); and Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, American Chemical Society (1995). He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. |
