The
Center for Advanced Study has organized a two-day event
in honor of Richard W. (Chip) Burkhardt who retired from
the department of History at the end of the 2004-05 academic
year. This event also celebrates the recent release of
his latest book, Patterns of Behavior: Konrad Lorenz,
Niko Tinbergen, and the Founding of Ethology (University
of Chicago Press).
In May 2005, Chip delivered his final CAS/MillerComm
introduction as Chair of the George A. Miller Programs
Committee. Besides
his 3-year stewardship of this prestigious public events
series, Chip served on the CAS Policy Committee and oversaw
the merger of the GAM Endowment and CAS/MillerComm Committees
into the George A. Miller Programs Committee. With Harris
Lewin (Professor of Animal Sciences and Director, Institute
for Genomic Biology), he also coordinated the very successful
CAS Interdisciplinary Initiative for 2001-02, The
New Biology: Issues and Opportunities.
The Center for Advanced Study gratefully acknowledges
the help of Harry Liebersohn (Professor of History)
and the
cosponsorship from the Office of the Provost, the College
of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of History, the
Campus Honors Program, and Spurlock Museum.
