Honoring the lifetime achievements of John Bardeen, CAS Professor of Physics and Electrical and Computer Engineering, the CAS John Bardeen Graduate Scholars Program was inaugurated in 1999 during the 40th Anniversary Year celebration of the Center for Advanced Study.

The program grants stipends to graduate students pursuing a research topic related to a current Center Initiative. Since its inception twelve young scholars have benefited from the program participating in the CAS faculty/graduate student seminar and interacting closely with invited speakers.

Because the program was funded not by an endowment but by a small surplus in the CAS budget, the ongoing campus budget crisis has made it impossible to continue funding through internal sources. When the Center's efforts this year failed to secure separate funding, the John Bardeen Graduate Scholars Program was suspended indefinitely. No awards will be given in 2005-06.

We hope to restore this valuable program as soon as recurring funds become available. Please contact the Center if you would like to make a contribution.
